It's an underrated technique, often pushed aside in favour of the oil on canvas. That's why my avatar features a painting by Wyke Bayliss, a victorian age painter, who painted it using pen and watercolour technique. I just love the lightness and the illusion of the motion which is so easily presented using the technique. Feel free to write thine opinions on the watercolour painting, I'd be glad to see some activity here. Waß makchenzie hiie?!?!?!

Easily the most impressive watercolour painting I've seen. It is stunning, and rather unusually detailed for a watercolour.
Here's a slightly larger shot of his Ely Cathedral and other works (Cologne cathedral, Notre Dame Chapel, Caudebec-en-Caux) The painting of Ely cathedral is definitely my favourite out of these three, as the misty, glowing area in the distance at the back of the cathedral is tout simplement magnifique. I'm not really a fan of this type of art, but he did a very good job indeed. While you marvel at the superimposed ceiling, you might miss how wonderful the floor looks too. Clearly Sir Bayliss was exceptionally successful in capturing the precise mood within a cathedral (though I've read on wikipedia cathedrals and churches were his almost exclusive focus as a painter). |
