Is your computer, your user account being affected by parental controls? Does your operating system support parental control?
Does your parent buy a parental control software and install on your computer? My computer is Windows Vista, and it is not parental-controlled. My parents does not care about that. If your computer's Internet access is blocked, use a proxy, There are so many Web proxies, it's impossible to block them all. There is a way to see if a tracking software exists. Just open your Web browser, and go to Google, and search "I hate my mom", "I hate <YOUR MOM's NAME HERE> ", "my mom is watching me" or other things that will cause a reaction to your parents. and keep refreshing the page, this will duplicate the log entries. When your parents sees the log, they will see the Google searches you made. You can also do that trick with "http://i-hate-my-mom.com", "http://my-mom-is-watching-me.com" (security does not work, so psychology works here) Open-source operating systems and software does not care about parental controls, because of the trusted computing thing, so you can just get a Linux Live CD/USB and do anything you want. |

I'm generally against parental controls... as you said, there are many ways around them, and forcing something onto kids will only make them want to contradict you. Parents should have the right to block websites that are inappropriate, but not entirely at their own discretion. If the sites are harmless, they should not be blocked. I think it's better to instruct children about things that are unsafe on the internet instead of just blocking stuff.
As for me, I've always (since I was like, 8) been the administrator of my home computers and networks, so I've always kept all the passwords. But I've also always been aware of risks. Interesting tips, SpaceMan! :) |

I'm mostly against parental controls, too. I understand if you want to block a harmful site. That's acceptable. But really, most automatic blockers end up blocking web administration websites, several informatory websites, and sometimes the firewall won't let some programs, such as FileZilla, the web browser, etc, connect.

Parental Controls is pseudo-censorship, which means it's just as stupid as actual censorship. VPNs and proxies are so obvious, I'm surprised Soccer mom's don't really know about them.
